Why consider learning with me:

Hi there, I’m Gabrielle Brickey! I’ve been creating art for over 20 years and I still feel as passionate about it as I did on day one.

I have a passion for art, but I also have a passion for teaching art because I remember how it felt when I first started to learn. It was a struggle! And I want to help you alleviate some of those struggles that come along with learning this new skill.

I’ve taught thousands of students how to improve their drawings and illustrations and I’d love to help you on your art journey too. Let me share with you the essentials of color that have taken me years of study to figure out.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with many companies over the years, including Procreate, Clip Studio Paint, Huion, XP Pen, Ohuhu, and more.

If you have always wanted to learn how to use color, but didn’t know where to start, jump into class today and let’s start creating.

Are beginners welcome? What if I’m more intermediate or advanced?

Beginners- We’ll start with the very basics: the three properties that make up every color. Then we’ll build from there! I try to get into the mind of the beginner when creating my foundational art classes, so beginners should feel at home in this class.

Intermediate or Advanced- you may know this stuff already! However, I have always pulled value from beginner courses myself, because they are taught from a new perspective. So more intermediate and advanced artists are welcome if you’d like a refresher or are interested in learning ideas from another perspective. I’ve found that everyone teaches color differently, so feel welcome!

Why should I learn about color?

  1. Stand out from the crowd: Learning about color, simply put, will help you create better, more compelling art pieces. In a sea of art, your pieces will stand out if you learn how to use it right! If you’re an artist, learning color and how to use it is  simply a must.
  2. Effective communication: Color plays a significant role in communicating ideas. Understanding color theory can also help you share your message more effectively, whatever your message may be.
  3. Professional development: Whether you’re an artist, web designer, photographer, etc. color theory is a fundamental skill that you must possess. Clients will expect you to have a deep understanding of color and its application. Knowing how to work with color can open up a whole new world of creative possibilities and financial opportunities too.
  4. Appreciation of art: Understanding color theory can help you appreciate and analyze art more deeply. You’ll be able to identify how color is used to create different moods and how artists use color to communicate their ideas.

How is this course taught?

This class is taught in the English language.

I use slides as well as photos and videos to share examples. I demonstrate using watercolor, Adobe Photoshop, Procreate, oil paint, and more– basically in a variety of traditional and digital mediums.

This class is a deep dive on the element of color, so I focus more on color itself than I do on any one medium.

More about the class:

Composition is the placement or arrangement of elements using the principles of design. Let me break that down. When we make a drawing or a painting we draw our paint on a 2D surface, often a rectangle or square. Whether it’s a piece of paper, a canvas, or a digital file, we have to build our composition within these four sides. When we make a piece of art we’re working with and arranging the elements of design on that 2D surface. Elements are the visible things we can see, form, shape, space, texture, line value, and of course, COLOR.

These elements are the makeup of a piece of art. In other classes, I’ll go into each of these other elements in more detail. But for this class, we’re going to just dive into color.

Color is really an amazing thing. According to scientists, the human eye can detect millions upon millions of unique colors. So how can we possibly translate this complex thing in to our art? Well, in this class I’ll explain the properties of color so that you understand it a little better. I also want to share some principles that had been tried by artists before us and have proved successful, so that the use of color in our art is made a bit simpler.

The more we understand about color and the other elements of design, the better our compositions will be.

In making this color class, I realized that everyone has slightly different thoughts about color. I personally believe that there is no end-all be-all, and that there are no exact color rules. In fact, I think many different approaches to color and color theory can work successfully. So please don’t walk away from this class and think if you don’t follow one of these ideas then your piece is going to fail. Certainly not. Think of this class, these color schemes, and these ideas as a jumping off point to help inspire you and get you started. All subjects and color mediums are welcome.

I’d love to see you in class and help you tackle what can be an intimidating element of design. Let’s simplify color today!
