Doctoral Capstone Experience , Sensory-Friendly Programming at the Iowa State Fair.

Course Description

This online course focuses on sensory-friendly program development for children/adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or sensory-processing disorders, specifically in a state fair setting. This occupational therapy doctoral capstone experience was completed in collaboration with the Iowa State Fair and occupational therapists from ChildServe, an outpatient pediatric clinic located in Johnston, IA. This doctoral capstone experience began with a review of published literature regarding sensory-processing disorders in relation to community participation and socialization. From this review of literature, it was clear there was a need for continued events within the community for individual with sensory-processing needs and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The next step was getting in contact with a local community organization, the Iowa State Fair. A informant interview was conducted to gain a better understanding of this community event known as the “Sensory-Friendly Morning at the Iowa State Fair”. The following course outlines the steps to addressing this need within the community and how other organization, businesses, and fairs can implement ‘sensory-friendly’ programming. Collaboration with state fair employees, pediatric occupational therapists, marketing and sponsorship teams was a crucial step in this project. Additionally, this course emphasizes the importance of advocating for the role of OT in non-traditional spaces.
