VITA for Foster Youth , A Training on the California Foster Youth Tax Credit and Assisting Foster Youth.

Course Description

This course is for VITA Volunteers to learn about the California Foster Youth Tax Credit (FYTC) and how to assist current and former foster youth. The FYTC is a refundable tax credit young adults ages 18-25 who file their state taxes, were in foster care on or after age 13, and earned at least $1 in the tax year. The Foster Youth Tax Credit was established in California state law in July 2022 as part of the California Earned Income Tax Program and is the only one in the nation. It was first implemented on January 1st 2023 for individuals who are filing their taxes for the 2022 tax year. The foster youth population is unique and many of them will be filing their taxes for the first time because of their age or low income. Assisting young adults currently or formerly in foster care with filing their taxes can put hundreds to thousands of dollars in their pockets to cover basic necessities and more. Throughout the course we will also share resources that JBAY has created to help foster youth with tax filing. We encourage all VITA Volunteers across California to take the time to learn about this important tax credit and how to best assist foster youth with tax filing.
